GEWA Strings is one of the five divisions of GEWA music. Founded in the history of the company, GEWA Strings represents the oldest division. Since its foundation in 1925, the development and construction of instruments such as violins, cellos and basses, as well as the corresponding cases, have been part of the DNA of GEWA music. Under the umbrella of GEWA music, GEWA Strings is a separate division dedicated entirely to development and manufacturing, sales and marketing, and customer service. The majority of our development and product managers are trained luthiers and master instrument makers. Following the tradition of the Vogtland region, all concepts and ideas are developed at the company site in Adorf, produced in parts (GEWA - Made in Germany) or manufactured in our own factory in Asia, in compliance with the highest standards (GEWA Responsibility) and production methods. GEWA Strings has stood for quality and competence for almost 100 years.

The right size of instrument is crucial for beginning. For example, the violin is a frequently chosen instrument for beginners. Here, various instrument and bow sizes have to be taken into account and adapted to the respective age or body size, the length of the arms, hands and fingers of the musician. However, the arm length remains the decisive factor. Parents and beginners can use the following table as a guide:

The rule of thumb is that the bigger the instrument, the later the start, because it is simply a question of controllable dimensions. Our recommendations:

  • Violin: The recommended starting age for violin is around 5 years old.
  • Cello: At about 7 to 8 years
  • Double bass: From about 8 years of age, because the instrument requires a certain body height.

The 3/4 and 4/4 bass are the dimensions of the double bass. The larger the instrument, the larger the scale length and the vibrating string length of the bass. Unlike the cello, for example, the 3/4 bass, with an overall size of 1.80 m, is already a stately adult instrument. Our recommendations:

  • 1/8 double bass with vibrating string length with 80 cm is suitable for children with an eye height of 130-135 cm (about 8-10 years).
  • 1/4 double bass with vibrating strings, 90 cm long, is suitable for children with an eye height of 140-145 cm (about 10-12 years).
  • 1/2 double bass with vibrating string length 97 cm is suitable for children with an eye height of 150-160 cm (about 12-14 years)
  • 3/4 double bass with vibrating strings, 103 cm, is suitable for children with an eye height of 165 cm (about 14 years and older and for adults).

In the event of a warranty claim, please contact the dealer from whom you purchased the product. They are responsible for the warranty and will also contact us in case of doubt.
